Website Talk

Here we go everybody.. Time to learn about websites, and their technology!

Everyone knows 'what a website is' but few actually know.  The simplest way I can break it down for people is to think of a webPAGE as a single document, like a word document, but it's home is on a web server.  A web server is your internet real estate, you pay someone to 'host' your website which means they have a computer that is always connected to the internet, and is designed to share information with people freely.  There is special software running on these servers that makes them different than a desktop, but physically they can resemble a desktop computer in many cases.

A webSITE is a collection of webPAGES, usually falling under one DOMAIN.  A domain is a friendly name to let computers find your site.  For example, you found this webPAGE (my Blog) by asking your computer to visit drpcfix.com, your computer asks around a bit and figures out which webserver is hosting my webSITE, and your computer shows you a copy of the pages from my server in Colorado.

Re-Cap

Websites (very simple ones) are a collection of documents, like word files with images and links.

Web servers are special computers with a fast internet connection, that are built to run very fast, and very stable.

Domain Names are the friendly name you purchase through a registrar, they are usually around $10 per year to keep the name in a database.  Think of this like the title fee's when you purchase a home, you pay someone to manage the registry.

Email is similar, it requires a server out in internet-land to hold all your information until you request it, whether through Outlook, or a web interface.

Email usually charges more to host because there can be so much more data moved depending on how it is used.

Look for another post on advertising and branding through the web later this week.
