Synergy on Windows 7 - Proper HowTo

Or so that's how I rememberd it.. I ran it on XP machines a few years back and it was dead simple.

This new version took me an hour to get working - and my TAB key still isn't working on the server, oh well.. maybe a reboot fixes that.

Here is what you must do with Windows 7 - save yourself some trouble..

  1. Do not install as a service, you will notice it allows you to if  run the launcher as administrator - didn't seem to work. (will test more soon)
  2. Per someone elses note on the internet, if you change the executables to run as administrator (C:\program files\synergy\bin\*.exe) - the program will work properly when you have installers and other admin credentialed programs running - if you don't change this, it appears really unstable.  Right click all the exe's in the bin folder, compatability, run as administrator.
  3. When you are defining screens, A, B (really computers, not screens - since 2 dual monitor computers will work with just A and B, a is left pc, b is right pc) the ALIAS is the 'screen name' or computer name. It doesn't say that anywhere that I saw.. that took a while..
  4. Keep the links simple, point one to the left of the other, and back again. (see image to right)
  5. Feel free to install at user login, this seems to work for my setup
  6. Start the server first -
  7. Start the other machine, should be fine.  (BOTH machines need all the exe's as administrator)

One symptom I saw that led me to quit testing the service was - when I installed as service and hit TEST it worked, when I hit START it didn't work - I think the service isn't interacting with the desktop on Windows 7.

Feel free to comment if you know otherwise..

have fun.
